I read an article entitled “It is discriminatory for the government to consider race.” I believe racial discrimination, even in the form of “Affirmative Action” is wrong and completely unconstitutional. Our country was founded “dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Another manifestation of this particular brand of racism is diversity quotas used by corporatioins for hiring and institutions of higher education for admission. It should make no difference what social demographic someone comes from. What should determine employment or admission is their qualifications. I believe that social demographics, though well-intentioned, have done incredible harm. There is only one race, the human race. It makes absolutely no difference if you have a little more or a little less pigment in your skin than I do. We are all people. The government likes to classify everybody, putting all of us in their little box, whether thats Caucasian, Latino, African-American, Native American, Asian-American etc. What difference does it make? We are all Americans!!! I have hope that President-Elect Obama will be a voice for change in this area. Let us finally cast aside racism. We continually place limits on people based on physical characteristics they couldn’t and didn’t choose by putting everyone in these little boxes. The government is like a puppeteer pulling all these little strings and saying, “let’s see, you’re from this certain social demographic, therefore, you qualify for these certain programs and will go into this small group of occupations etc.” Is it not high time we got over our prejudices and simply accepted everybody based on their merits and humanity? I say a resounding yes!!

Recent events on Wall Street and in Washington DC have given me so much to right about. As you hopefully already know (If you don’t because you just don’t really care, Shame on You!!!) the US economy is going down the tubes. Banks are failing, credit is frozen, and consumer confidence is at an all time low. So whats the government’s solution? Oh, this is good. Let’s give them even more sweeping powers and let them “help” us by spending 700billion dollars to bailout Wall Street. Where is this money coming from? The pockets of the American taxpayer. This is the Bailout plan. Now there are definately several benefits to this plan. It would hopefully serve to unlock frozen credit and restore consumer confidence. It would probably even make money for the taxpayers in the end. My issue with it is more of an ideological stance. (et me qualify my blog by stating that I am registered Independent but lean very strongly towards Libertarianism.) I am for small government, and I don’t think that we as Americans should vest that kind of power in a fallible human government. It is completely unconstitutional for the government to interfere in the US economy as much as they already do now. I shudder to think the kind of power we would be giving to them. My other big problem with the bailout plan is the oversight committee. Not only is it a farce as far as a nonpartisan unbiased supervisory committee, It is simply more bureaucracy. The problem is that we would not simply be giving the government temporary power to jumpstart the economy, but this power and many added levels of bureaucracy would never go away. It would be a entrenched into american government from now on out. bringing us one step closer to being a socialist state where the central government has absolute authority. The next step after that would be for a charismatic leader to arise and woo over the masses and after he had their support there would be a coup and then would come the dictatorship. So while short-term it might ease financial strain, I believe that longterm it would be a noose around the neck of the American people.

I’m going to use my first blog-post to introduce the topic I think I will be writing on. It seems timely to discuss politics. Even though this is a somewhat controversial topic, I feel that the best purpose that I could attempt to achieve with my blog would be to provoke honest discussion and perhaps a hearty debate. Most people have very strong views concerning political issues. They may be die-hard supporters of one political party or another or they may simply have a pet issue (or issues) that they support no matter what party lines they may have to cross along the way. This issue may be a policy issue such as fiscal police, foreign policy or a domestic policy. It can also be a social issue such as abortion, gay rights, immigration or a variety of other issues. I believe that it would be safe to say that no matter what the issue, any person you might talk to probably has a somewhat strong opinion on that topic. In current events, the 2008 Presidential campaign sparks heated debate over who the best candidate is, whether it be Barack Obama, John McCain, or perhaps even a third party candidate who would shake up the status quo. People from both sides have slung mud at both candidates. In my own paraphrase of those ignorant masses who really dont care about the truth of an accusation; “Barack Obama is a freakin’ muslim who has very little experience as evidenced by his voting record in which his vote of choice was “Present”. We definately cannot have that in the Oval Office. John McCain is an old has been who would merely be a continuation of the eight years of Bush reign in the oval office. He would start a war with anyone who pissed him off without even asking for the feedback of the international community.” Is one of these candidates truly superior or are we simply forced to choose between the lesser of two evils? There is also the possibility of a 3rd option who instead of spouting more rhetoric and campaign promises that they have absolutely no intention of keeping. The American political system is unfortunately marked by candidates wasting billions of dollars that could be used to actually solve problems in the real world to spend a few months saying whatever it takes to get them elected regardless of whether they actually believe it or have any intention of keeping those promises. “Its time for a change.” What that change actually might be or how it will be acheived is anyone’s guess. “I think — I’ll have my staff get to you. It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you.” Do we really want someone as president who doesn’t even know how many houses he owns?

Hey this is my first blog post ever. (actually a test post) pretty cool I guess.
