Is it making a difference?
Filed Under Uncategorized | 2 Comments
The question is… Since 1984, which was the year in which the legal drinking age was changed to 21, are those still under 21 not drinking? The federal government’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that in 2005, the most recent year for which complete figures are available, 85 percent of 20 year old Americans reported that they had used alcohol. So really, having 21 to be the legal drinking age is not working at all.
I mean honestly, which of you did not have a drink before turning 21 or even 18? Lowering the drinking age to 18 wouldn’t make a difference either in my opinion. But teaching 18 year olds about drinking responsibly and then earning a license to drink would make a difference. Imagine if the law changes to 18 and those 18 year olds are given a drinking license. Let’s say that all night clubs are now required to check for that drinking license at the door. If a teen does not have that license due a DUI or some type of alcohol abuse, they can’t get in. Not only at a night club, but they wouldn’t be able to even purchase alcohol anywhere without the license. That is a reasonable punishment that in my opinion would make a difference.
Alcohol education is mandatory only after you’ve been convicted of DUI. If a teenager is informed about how to drink responsibly, the age is not going to matter, it’s the wisdom that the teen gained from the education program.

Should they lower drinking age to 18

Ok so i know everyone’s been wating for this one. A little late but its interesting. in 1988, in response to the national mood against drunk driving and a threat by the Federal Government to cut off highway funding, every state had a minimum drinking age of 21. The argument is that young people should be given alcohol education, like driver’s education, and then rewarded with a drinking license, to alow them to purchase and drink in public places at age 18.
People have this opinion due to many reasons. First, 18 year olds are geeting signed up to go to war and serve their country but they are not allowed to drink. 18 year olds are also allowed to vote and choose the next president. These two reasons are very important parts of this countries goverment and safety. Two very large responsabilities. Not that all 18 year olds go to war but this is not projected to everyone.
If an 18 year old can be given the right to vote and the responsability as an American Citizen to serve the country, it should be fine if they could have a drink or two after a long day, with a drinking license. After all, having the legal drinking age set to 21 has not stoped 18 year olds or even 12 year olds from drinking. It would be better if were educated about drinking and earnned a license to drink legally.
