So long

Who really suffers when the stay at home mom drops their kids off at daycare so they can have time to themselves? Of course the teacher that’s taking care of the child!!! No that’s a joke… Of course it’s the child. Kids are getting more wise these days and know when mommy or daddy is not working. Those kids are the ones that act out all the time. How about for the babies in my class? They’re only 1 year old and all of a sudden mommy and the child are separated almost all day. They don’t understand. They are left at a strange place, with a bunch of kids running around, and with strange adults that are trying to make the baby feel comfortable.

Nap time is probably the worst. You know the kids who sleep with pacifiers and blankies, cold turkey just taken away from them because of the health department. Then they have to sleep on a mat on the floor. No more crib. See so by the end of the day the child is the one suffering while mommy is getting her nails done and drinking a nice latte from starbucks.

This completes my online blog. You can cleary see which side I’m on about taking your children to daycare if it’s really necessary.

A few years ago my teaching partner was telling me a story about this one particular “stay at home mom”. She had been married and had one child. She had gotten divorced when she met another man. That man had 3 other children. They got married again. That would be twice for both of them. He was one of the biggest known names in law. He had taken cases that paid billions of dollars. She was the lucky woman to be a stay at home mom and take care of her kids. YEA RIGHT… this woman was part of a country club and played tennis. She had lunch dates and yacht club meetings. For her to do all of that she put her children in daycare.

So one day while dropping one of her children off to Ms. Kathy, who has been at country day for 8 years and is my teaching partner, specifically told Kathy “Don’t call me today because I have a tennis game”. Kathy almost flipped her lid.

The next week it just so happened that her little one year old son was very sick and I mean running a 102 fever. Kathy called up to the front office to have them call his mom so that he could be picked up to go home. They did call. She said,”I just ordered my food I will be there when I can”. Now how can anyone in their right mind leave a sick child? That kind of behavior makes me seriously sick to my stomach.

Here is what I think about families putting their children in a daycare center. I honestly think it is only necessary for a family to have their child in a daycare center if both of the parents have to work. Some of the children I have in my class and are there from 8 to 5, one of their parents stay at home, and it’s mostly the mom. OH and then I have some families whose both parents work from home and have their own businesses and their children are still in daycare all day. Parents who have no choice but to work to make a living, I see no wrong with putting your child in a well put together environment, with a good curriculum, and great teachers. Those children are mostly the best behaved. Why is it that woman feel the need to take breaks from being around their children? Why did you even have children in the first place if all you want to do is take time out of the day for yourself? I consider that very selfish. To me, being a mom and staying home with your children is the most spectacular job. It is guaranteed a lot of hard work but it is the most rewarding. Daycare centers have a lot to offer being that children are learning new things every single day with the curriculum. It’s a great place for social interaction as well. But for the stay at mom who has all the time in the world, instead of worrying about getting your nails done or having your hair colored they should be taking the time out to teach their children and spend the most crucial years of a child’s life together.

What would you look for if you ever had to bring your child to a daycare center to be watched if you had to work? Would you look for teachers who are friendly? Would you look for what appears to be a clean center? Or would you be interested in a certain type of curriculum?

Since I work at a daycare center I know what I would look for. The most important thing that I would look for and be most interested in is how the teachers interact with the children. I have plenty of co workers who feel like “disciplining” a child from a seated position really works. So if I was a mother walking around checking out a daycare center I would not want to see any of the teachers sitting and perhaps socializing with other co workers. The one thing that drives me crazy is how safe can the children be if their teachers are just sitting down and who knows if they’re being properly watched. So many incidents happen when a teacher is sitting which probably can be prevented. Granted you can’t ALWAYS catch a kid if he falls, they’re kids it’s what they do, but their might be that one time you can save a child from getting a boo boo. This brings me back to the biting issue that children have. They are like little snakes, fast and sneaky, they will bite within milliseconds. That’s why it’s so much better to be on your toes.

That’s really what I would look for if I was interested in a daycare facility. Germs are everywhere, kids will dig in the dirt no matter where they go. So the germs will be passed on.

I was reading an article about E.coli and daycare and the article states that a 22 month old child had died of an E. coli infection. Following the death of that child, an outbreak of E. coli erupted among children of that same community. They later found out after studies, that those children from that same community were part of the same daycare center.

Germs and bacteria LOVE daycare centers. There are so many little dirty children to live on and in. When you have 18 children in one classroom of course germs are going to be spread and kids will get sick. Not necessarily become infected with E. coli but with a cold, or ear infections. They touch, sneeze and cough on everything, then that next kid is most likely to put that same toy near or in their mouth.

Most likely the E. coli infection came from not cleaning properly after going number 2, which causes UTI’s in children which can lead to them having seizures, and running very high fevers and most likely end in the hospital. This probably means the teacher at that daycare center didn’t help the child in the bathroom. If the child is not potty trained, the teacher let the poor child sit in a pooped diaper. Which is kind of a form of neglect. And if that’s the case then the teacher should be severely punished because the child died.

We had a case of an E.coli infection, it caused the child to have a seizure and end up in the hospital. The child developed a UTI and kidney infection cause by the bacteria E. coli.

This brings me back to my room 1-A. Me and my teaching partners are constantly cleaning the room, bleaching and disinfecting everything the kids come in contact with. We try to keep our kids as healthy and clean as possible. We always are changing their diapers making sure they are not wet or sitting in poop because that’s a perfect place for bacteria to grow and infect the child.

There needs to be more caring and loving teachers around the world like me. =)

So that wonderful person Season that I talked about in my pervious blog, finally quit Country Day of Jupiter.  She had found a different job at another school which will help her in the career path she has chosen. She is going to school for eduation so it works out for her perfectly. Her and my boss had finally had it out, and let me tell you it got really ugly. Season is finally doing something that she wanted to do which is to be a lead teacher and run her own classroom.

Really, I am happy for Season but the only thing i’m worried about is having my boss stick an employee in my room to work and them have no idea how to deal with kids.  And I also really worry about how hard the person will be willing to work. My room is the hardest room to work in. They are only one year old so you constantly have to be running around, chasing them, changing diapers, and keeping every eye on the kids. They fall down constantly, bump into eachother, and have runny noses all day, that means you have to be on your toes and help these kids stay safe in every way possible. The new employees that my boss hires are not capable of handling that kind of work. They are tired by 10 o’clock in the morning. That’s really my only concern about Season leaving, she was one of the best teaching partners ever and I would give anything to have her back to teach with me again.

1-A

“I don’t know what has gotten into you girls down their in 1-A, you think you’re perfect, and I’ll let you know right now I don’t like it” says my sweet and friendly boss. That coming from my boss who is the owner of Country Day is nothing new. I hear about 5 comments like that a day from her, but hey she has all the power over me keeping my job so I just bite the bullet and punch walls!! =)

1-A is the name of the toddler classroom I work in. In 1-A I have 3 other teaching partners. Kathy, Season, and Jennifer. The reason there are so many teachers for on room is because I have 19 kids on my roll and the ratio of staff to children is 1 to 6. Anyways, Kathy has been working at Country Day for 8 years. I consider her one of my good friends, she is a mother of 2 and a wife. Season who is a couple of months younger then me is another one of my good friends. She will be at Country Day a year in December. The other girl Jennifer has only been there a few months and I have nothing nice to say about her. If it weren’t for Kathy and Season being the best teaching partners I would not work at Country Day with unfriendly people all around (bosses). We laugh all day long until we go home. Working with such great people makes my day go by super fast. Me, Season and Kathy actually go out sometimes on the weekends. It gives us a chance to have a good time outside of the work place.

I was reading a blog about a daycare worker being arrested for biting a child. The worker was a 54 year old woman who bit a 17 month old child on the arm.

I do not agree with her behavior at all. It actually kind of disgusts me for a lady of that age to think of “biting” a child as a form of discipline. I have known some children who have a serious biting problem and yes their PARENTS have bitten them back, but only to show it does hurt. If you’re a parent that thinks biting your child back is ok and it may be to help their biting problem, then I don’t see anything wrong with it. But as a 17 month old caregiver you certainly do not, what so ever, put your hands on any child especially your mouth.

Working with children requires a great abundance of patience. I believe it is truly a gift to be able to understand the way children behave at certain ages. Or if you don’t quite understand there are so many courses and books out there to inform you of why some children act the way they do. Children of all ages bite, don’t share, misbehave, push buttons, hit and scream. It’s a way of showing their feelings and in a way it’s a form of communication. In my previous blog I had written about being with Country Day of Jupiter since March of 2007 and I have never once even thought about putting my hands on any one of my children because I lost my cool or as a form of discipline. Their are also courses on Guidance and Discipline. That’s why it’s mind boggling to read a blog about an older woman biting a 17 month old child.

Every one’s worst fear who works at a daycare is a surprise visit from the health department. Especially the owners.

As soon as they arrived, the director of country day over the loud speaker announces they’re here. So what do all the employees do now? I know… we all scramble around like a bunch of chickens that just got their heads chopped off making sure all the diaper creams are put away, the bleach bottles are locked up, and we’re all in ratio.

The health department walks around campus and in each of the classrooms. It was lunchtime when she walked in my room. She walked by each child taking notes and what each child was eating. I guess that’s part of their job to write down everyone’s lunch… weird I know. She should have been more concerned about if our classroom passed the health department inspection.

It turns out the only real reason why the health department decided to visit country day is because the owners want to create an infant room. The health department needed to make sure there was enough space and equipment to open that kind of room. There are so many rules to abide by when you have an infant room on campus. This only means the health department will be visiting country day of Jupiter more often and the staff and I will  be just as frantic every time they arrive.

The reason I chose the topic of Daycare is because I’ve been working at Country Day of Jupiter since march of 2007. Before that I was an aftercare counselor at Jerry Thomas Elementary school for two years. You can say I truly have a love for children. Country Day of Jupiter is privately owned and operated and has been up and running for over 20 years. I work in what is called a toddler room. The children range in the ages from twelve months to twenty four months. I have a total of nineteen children in my class, all with different personalities, wants and needs so let me tell you it gets crazy! If one is crying for food the other is crying because they’re tired. Working with children that are only one is very rewarding, to all their little hugs and kisses, when they cry when I leave the room or to when they fall down and need their boo-boo to be kissed.  These children are in my care from eight o’clock in the morning until five o’clock at night. Basically, I spend more time with them then their parents.

Working at a daycare requires a certain number of “hours” to be passed and presented in certificates to be able to work in a daycare. It’s called your forty hour training. The health department requires everyone working in a daycare to have their forty hours. Within the forty hours of training you are taught the basic rules and regulations, basic guidence and discipline, all about suspecting abuse and neglect, early literacy, and basic growth and development. If the health department decides to do a surprise visit at a daycare and you are breaking the rules, be prepared to be fined with a great amount of money. But don’t worry only the owners have to pay the fines, not the employees!
