Teenagers and Cell Phones
Filed Under Uncategorized | 4 Comments
I was reading information about cell phones and opposing viewpoints and I came across an interesting article. It was talking about teenagers and cell phones. Several states have created laws that ban sixteen and seventeen year olds from using cell phones or any other electronic devices such as laptops while driving. One of these states is California. Teenagers are banned from using cell phones but yet older adults can still use cell phones while driving. This was done supposedly because teenagers are not experienced drivers and have very slow reflexes. It has been shown in other research that teenagers have the most accidents than any other age group. A lot of teenagers think that this certain law is discriminating against them and think that it is very unfair. Although I do agree with this statement I don’t think that teenagers should be the only one involved with this law. No matter how old you are there is still some sort of a distraction when you use cell phones and drive. Many people do not agree with these types of laws that ban the use of cell phones while driving. The reason for this is because other distractions such as putting on makeup and the radio are not illegal then why should cell phones be. People believe that listening to the radio, putting on makeup in the car, and even eating in the car are just as much of a distraction as cell phones. They are distractions but I don’t think they are as much as a distraction of talking on a cell phone.

This is just another story to prove my point and show to you how dangerous driving can get when using the cell phone behind the wheel. A sixteen year old girl’s life was lost when she was texting on her phone and driving on Interstate ten. Her and her two friends were driving home after they had gone to a friend’s house. While she was driving on Interstate ten she was texting on her phone and she lost control of her car and caused it to roll over repeated times. Her two friends who where sitting in the back seat’s of the car where also killed. Three lives were taken away for no reason. The parents of these teenagers are now hoping that this accident that had caused them to lose their precious children will open up the eyes of other teenagers and allow them to see the danger of using a cell phone while driving. Many lives are lost every day due to the carelessness of many people. It is an issue that we deal with every day. You are not only putting yourself at risk but you are also putting innocent people at risk. It has been shown in research that driving while using your cell phone increases your risk of getting into a serious car accident by four times. This is my last blog and I have not only learned a lot but have hoped to share this information with all of you. This blog has helped come up with many ideas that I can use on my persuasive. I appreciate the comments!

Driving with cell phones

Using your cell phones while driving is a controversial issue that many often debate about. Cell phones while driving should not be permitted and this is for several reasons. One reason being that when using a cell phone you do not have your undivided attention on what really is important and that is the road. Another reason is that driving is a privilege and not a right. If you put other people in harms way then that privilege should be taken away from you. Cell phones have caused 2,600 deaths in the United States and 330,000 people and been injured due to driving while using their cell phones. These numbers are astonishingly high and are numbers that don’t even need to exist. Careless drivers allow these numbers to increase every day. Several studies have shown that a person using a cell phone while driving is as impaired as a person who is intoxicated with alcohol at around .8. This tells you using cell phones are as bad as drunk driving. That’s funny because driving intoxicated is against the law but yet they are pretty much the same. It has also been shown that people using cell phones while driving where twenty four percent slower to react to breaks then your average person. Like I said earlier driving is a privilege that we all have to earn. It is not a right that we are born with. We do not have the right to drive. If we are hurting or killing other people because of our carelessness then this privilege needs to be taken away from us.

Cell phones in prison
Filed Under Uncategorized | 3 Comments
I was reading this article and it was quite interesting. While they were searching the death row in Livingston they found two smuggled cell phones. Ten of the death row inmates made about three thousand phone calls in about thirty days. They believe that this was done from a help of a prison guard who possibly was bribed. The governor Perry wanted a statewide lockdown to check every staff, prisoner, and visitor for smuggling. The police eventually arrested one of the prisoners mother. These inmates are held in isolation for about twenty four hours but they are allowed to have visitors. They have said that they have taken around nineteen cell phones throughout the year and this is becoming a bigger issue. A man even got repeated phone calls from a murdered. The murderer in the prison asked the man to find an attorney for his case and even stated “I know where your daughter lives.” The murderer’s mother was paying for this bill. This phone was given to other gang members where they could give phone calls to gang’s members not in prison. Around two thousand and eight hundred phone calls were made from this phone alone. But the phone was eventually taken from him. I thought this article was interesting and it shows what people will actually do for a cell phone. Even if this includes bribing a officer with two thousand dollars. A cell phone was a mean of communication for these inmates to people outside of their prison. Whether they should be allowed to have these cell phones is a whole different issue.

Cell phones while driving

Many people may not realize that your life is much more important that a call on your cell phone. Everyone knows that it is really more difficult to concentrate when you are doing more than one thing at a time and that is just the way humans work. Especially is that one thing you really need to concentrate on is the road and the environment that you are in. It is obvious that you are more focused when on the road and you’re surrounding when not answering a simple cell phone call. In many countries already there has been a laws established about driving and talking on your cell phone. In the United Kingdom if you are caught with a cell phone in your hand while driving you have to pay a certain fee and also you will get points on your driver license. They don’t play when it comes to this! Although this has been established people are still finding ways to avoid this law such as using Bluetooth which does not require you to use your hands when talking on the phone. Even if you are using Bluetooth you are still not completely focused on the most important thing which is the road. When driving you are not only playing with your life but you could potentially take aw ay the life of the many drivers out there. A conversation on the cell phone and driving are just two things that were not meant to be together so there is no reason why they are today.

Cell phones while driving

There has always been a controversy on whether cell phone use while driving should be banned. I firmly disagree on this issue. Although I have only talked about the negative issues about cell phones there are some positive ones. While driving cell phones don’t have to be a haphazard if you don’t make them. If talking on the phone is dangerous then what about the radio. Some people dance and are focused on the music more then their driving. But yet the radio isn’t banned is it? Nope they actually make radios in the car. Some people may argue that you have to hold the cell phone in your hand which occupies the hand that really should be on the steering wheel. I know many people that do their make up or eat their lunch while driving. I know that cell phones may increase the risk that you may have out on the road but there are other things that distract us and they are not being taken care of. What if your child is calling you about an emergency that involves the house on fire. But you are on the road. Or your car breaks down and you need to call for help. Since you are in your car you are not allowed to pick up your phone. Also, these days they have the Bluetooth ear piece that you can put into your ear to have a conversation with someone. That solves one problem. Are you still being distracted? To be continued………..

Don’t answer cell phones while charging
Filed Under Uncategorized | 4 Comments
I was doing my search on the web to find out more about the dangers of cell phones. I came across this interesting article about the dangers of answering the cell phone while it is charging. Surprisingly if you answer your cell phone while it is charging it could possibly cause death. I never really have done this before but never looked at it as such a big deal. There have been several reports of deaths because people have answered their cell phones while it was charging. A young man was putting his cell phone on charge. Just as he was doing this he received a phone call. He decided to answer the call with the wire still plugged into cell phone. Just then an electrical current ran through the phone and into the young man’s body. He suddenly fell to the floor and created a loud thump. Hearing the loud thump his parents rushed into the room only to find the young man’s body on the floor. He had a weak heartbeat and the edge of his fingers had been burnt. His parents rushed him to the closest hospital near the home. When he arrived at the hospital the doctor had to be the person to tell the parents that their son was DEAD! The only son they had, had been killed by a cell phone. This is one of the many stories of children and adults that had died because they answered a phone call while their cell phone was on charge. This shows one of the few hazards a cell phone brings with its usage.

Cell Phone Etiquette

While I was searching different blogs I ran across this certain one about cell phones. This lady went to her daughter’s graduation on Sunday. While her daughter was walking across the stage all she could hear were phones ringing and the different songs that people choose as their ringtones. Some people just don’t know when to silence their phone. I won’t lie. I would probably get very upset if not only one but several people’s phones went off. I am pretty sure that you would to. You probably experienced this yourself. Whether it was in class or in a formal assembly that was important your phone went off. Is it that hard to put your phone on silent or just simply turn it off? I myself was at a friend’s funeral and during the reception all of a sudden you here get low. Come on! Are you serious? I have learned by now that when you are at an important or formal event that you are to silence your cell phones. It has become pretty much a habit for me to silence my phone. I understand that we are humans and humans do forget or sometimes forget. But if it does happen is it hard to quickly turn it off. If I can have respect and considerations for the public I ask for decency from the public. Maybe some auditoriums need to have special devices to block the cell phone signal in the room so that you cannot use your cell phone. Just an option to look at.

The Environment

It has been found that consumers use their cell phones for approximately eighteen months before replacing it, according to INFORM which is an environmental research organization which is partly paid for by the Environmental Protection Agency. Most of the plans offer free or low cost cell phones making keeping your old phone a bad economic choice. So when cell phones are being thrown away it is not only the ones that truly are unusable but it is also the cell phones that no longer hold a good deal for the consumer. As the years go buy the population and need for cell phones will increase but so will the amount being thrown away. Cell phones have such a small average life span so you can see the cell phone disposal problem. It is estimated that by the year of two thousand and nine around two hundred cell phone will be discarded every year in the Unite States. Not only do cell phones take up space but they also contain toxic chemicals. These toxic chemicals include things such as arsenic, lead, and brominated compounds. These toxins as well as many other are entering our environment and are being broken down by the rainwater that enters theses landfills. The Environmental Protection Agency warns people that these toxins can cause many human health affects. This includes damage to the nervous system, reproductive and developmental problems, and cancer. Most of these I have talked about in the last blog. Most of the information I myself was unaware of. I hate to say it but I am one of the many people that contribute to this disgusting problem. It would be nice to see a change.

Danger’s of Radiation
Filed Under Uncategorized | 4 Comments
Cell phones are sold rapidly in our society today. Many of us have them. Before I begin let me through out some statistics that I found which to me was quite alarming. It has been said that about sixty thousand to seventy thousand cell phones are sold a day, and this is only in the United States. Americans use more then one hundred and ten million cell phones. When we are talking about worldwide we are looking at roughly about one billion people. So this is a big thing. It can be found all across the world. We see so much advertisement about the features but we have never been exposed to some of its dangers. At least I haven’t till now. I myself have a cell phone so I am one of the billion victims. Cell phones give off radio frequency radiation. This frequency causes many health problems. Although children are at higher risk for these potential health problems adults are just as susceptible. If you are exposed to this radio frequency radiations at a regular rate them you are in for a surprise. Radio frequency radiation causes abnormal growth in your cells and can also damage your DNA. These issues are pretty complex but it can even do something as simple as difficulty sleeping. It also has been shown to cause anxiety, depression, and irritability. We already have enough of this in our lives. We don’t need more instigators. It can also cause eye cancer, leukemia, and infertility. Imagine that!
